What are the symptoms of early/new HIV infection?

  • Fever
  • Skin rash
  • Myalgias/arthralgias (muscle pain/pain in the joints)
  • Night sweats
  • Headaches
  • Pharyngitis (inflammation of the throat)
  • Lymphadenopathy (enlargement of the lymph nodes)

These symptoms overlap those of other systemic infections, particularly the flu, but nasal congestion is NOT a feature of HIV seroconversion syndrome (the development of antibodies against a microorganism; the change in a person's antibody status from negative to positive).

If you are currently experiencing these symptoms and think you were recently exposed to HIV, please contact Donald Garmon , Clinical Coordinator, at 212-327-7290 or via email at dgarmon@adarc.org

We can provide free, confidential HIV antigen and antibody testing to make an accurate diagnosis.
