Within the last decade the spread of human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) has become a devastating worldwide epidemic. Commonly referred to as HIV, the virus gradually leads to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). As a result, the body's immune system is weakened and left vulnerable to various diseases.

While combination drug therapy, initially championed by ADARC, has helped reduce the death rate of HIV in America and Western Europe to one fifth of what it once was, the epidemic continues. United Nations AIDS officials and the World Health Organization estimate that 5 million people worldwide were newly infected with HIV in 2003, bringing the total number of people living with HIV/AIDS to 42 million.

The race to find answers to this elusive virus continues. Learn more about what researchers have already discovered in the subsections of this page. The urgency in conquering HIV is unyielding as many lives have been affected by its power.
